Summary

When you think about a series of islands that’s famous for its wine and sunshine, your initial reaction probably isn’t to hike all across it. We’re here to prove that it should be. Immerse yourself in Madeira’s mesmerizing flavours, volcanic landscapes, and rich culture and history on this six-day hiking adventure.

Itinerary

  • Day 1

    Santana

Arrive at any time. Tonight, meet your CEO and fellow travellers at the welcome meeting, then opt to head out for dinner with the group.

  • Day 2

    Santana

Explore Madeira's breathtaking north coast on a stunning 14km hike today. Said to provide some of the island's most spectacular vistas, today's hike is sure to take your breath away in more ways than one. Experience the island's diverse flora and fauna and vibrant greenery around each corner, before returning to Santana for a well deserved rest.

  • Day 3

    Santana/Funchal

Summit one of the island's tallest peaks, the Pico do Arieiro. At an altitude of 1,818m, it's the third highest in Madeira. The hike requires some scrambling with steep ascents, but stunning views of the island above the cloud line make every step worth it.

  • Day 4

    Funchal

Lace up your hiking boots once again and head out on the Larano Trail, this morning. Witness panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean alongside sheer cliffs dropping dramatically into the sea. Enjoy the fresh, salty air and green hills that are so characteristic of Madeira's mountainous terrain before heading back to Funchal for free time for dinner.

  • Day 5

    Funchal

Head out to the Paul da Serra levadas today. Essential to the island's irrigation system, the levadas were created to channel water from the rainy north to the dryer south, complete with walking paths used for this unique hiking opportunity. Move on to the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site boasting a subtropical rainforest, with a rich biodiversity. On your way back, stop at the dramatic Girão cliffs for another viewpoint, and if time and weather permits, take in the awe-inspiring views from the glass skywalk, adding a thrilling twist to your adventure.

  • Amazing trip in Madeira! Hikes with astonishing views in the most iconic spots of the island. Definitely a dream trip for hiking and ocean lovers. I had a great time. I think the trip was very well organized. I liked the hotels we stayed in, the CEO was amazing, the private transport very convenient. The app to communicate with the rest of the group very useful.

  • I would have liked the CEO to have participated more in the group besides just the hikes. I would recommend some other hikes be added. I think the CEO could have offered to book activities including dinner. People were largely left to fend for themselves. Up until this trip I would have rated G Adventures trips as a 10 but this one fell a little short.

Frequently asked questions

  • What is the physical rating of this hiking tour?

The tour has a physical rating of 4, indicating it is an active trip that involves demanding hikes and some scrambling with steep ascents, but the stunning views make every step worth it.
  • What type of accommodation is provided on this tour?

You will be staying in hotels for 5 nights. These are typically small, family-run establishments or pensions, which are clean, safe, and in convenient central locations, though some may lack elevators or air-conditioning.
  • Can I get my own room on this tour?

Yes, if you book the "My Own Room" option, you will receive a single room for all night stops. Please be aware that single room accommodations in European hotels are often smaller and may not be to the same service level as double-occupancy rooms.
  • What meals are included in the tour price?

The tour includes 5 breakfasts and 3 lunches. Dinners are generally not included, allowing you maximum flexibility in choosing where, what, and with whom to eat. Your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) will be able to suggest local restaurants.
  • What is the typical group size for this tour?

The maximum group size for this tour is 15 travelers, with an average group size of 12.
  • Will there be a tour leader or guide on this trip?

Yes, a Chief Experience Officer (CEO) will accompany you throughout the trip. They will provide information, suggestions for things to do and see, recommend local eating venues, and introduce you to local friends. Local guides are also utilized where specific knowledge enhances the experience.
  • What are the main highlights of the hiking routes?

Key highlights include trekking to Pico do Arieiro (one of Madeira's highest peaks at 1,818m), exploring Madeira's breathtaking north coast, hiking the gorgeous Larano Trail with panoramic Atlantic Ocean views, visiting the dramatic Cabo Girão cliffs (including an optional glass skywalk), and wandering through the Laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its subtropical rainforest biodiversity.
  • What is the recommended approach for money and currency on this tour?

A combination of Euros, credit cards (Visa is most widely accepted), debit cards, and possibly travelers cheques is recommended. While ATMs are available, there are no guarantees that your cards will work everywhere. Credit card purchases may incur a 5-10% fee. You should also have access to at least an additional USD $200 (or equivalent) as an emergency fund.
  • Is tipping customary in Madeira?

Yes, tipping is customary in Europe. A general rule is 10% of the bill for wait staff, and a smaller amount (€1 or €2) for other service providers. For local guides, recommendations range from €6-8 per day. For your CEO, €30-€40 per person per week can be used as a guideline if you felt they did an outstanding job.
  • Is travel insurance required for this trip?

Yes, travel insurance is compulsory to participate. You must have a minimum coverage of USD200,000 for medical expenses, including emergency evacuation and repatriation. It is strongly recommended to also cover personal liability, cancellation, curtailment, and loss of luggage and personal effects.
  • Are there any health considerations or vaccinations needed?

It is your responsibility to consult with your travel doctor for up-to-date medical travel information and any required inoculations well before departure. We recommend carrying a First Aid kit and hand sanitizers/antibacterial wipes, and assessing your ability to cope with the trip's physical demands.
  • What are the visa and passport requirements for this tour?

All countries require a valid passport with a minimum of 6 months validity. For travel in Europe, the Schengen visa system generally applies. As of 2025, ETIAS travel authorization will be introduced for visa-exempt nationals. It is your responsibility to check with your local embassy or consulate for the most up-to-date visa requirements for your nationality.
  • How does accommodation work for solo travelers?

We believe solo travelers should not have to pay more, so our group trips are designed for shared accommodation. Single travelers joining group trips are paired in twin or multi-share rooms with someone of the same sex for the duration of the trip. The "My Own Room" option is available if you prefer a single room.
  • What are the luggage restrictions or recommendations?

You are limited to one main piece of luggage per person, and we recommend using a backpack or a medium-sized, compact, and lightweight suitcase for your convenience. A daypack is also essential for daily excursions. You will be responsible for carrying your own luggage, including up and down stairs and on and off transportation.
  • Is there a specific dress code to be aware of?

When in places of religious worship, travelers are expected to dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered.
  • Are laundry facilities available during the tour?

Laundry facilities are offered by some hotels for a charge, or your CEO can direct you to the closest laundromat. We suggest bringing non-polluting/biodegradable soap for personal laundry.
  • What are the safety and security guidelines for this trip?

We strongly recommend using a neck wallet or money belt for passports and valuables, and leaving valuable jewelry at home. Many hotels provide safety deposit boxes. A lock for your luggage is also recommended. Your CEO can amend the itinerary if necessary due to safety concerns. During free time, use good judgment when selecting activities, and consider staying in small groups or taking taxis at night in major cities.
  • What resources are available for LGBTQ+ travelers regarding safety?

We encourage LGBTQ+ travelers to visit our dedicated LGBTQ+ page for useful resources and to consult tools like Equaldex to ensure you feel safe and comfortable throughout your adventure.
  • What is the Planeterra Foundation?

You can contribute to their "Dollar-a-day Program" to support these projects.
  • What is the minimum age to join this trip?

You must be 18 to travel unaccompanied on this tour. For minors traveling with a guardian over 21 years old, the minimum age is 12.
